ELECTRICITY CONSTRUCTION SET
SKETCHING
Following Merch Source's commission for IDL to design a DIY Electricity Construction Kit, we aimed to leverage our previous work on the DIY Solar Robot Construction Kit.
The challenge was to integrate suitable components from the Robot Kit into the new Electric Kit, specifically focusing on incorporating the central motor chest piece from the robot kit into fun and challenging builds. The STEM learning aspect is emphasized through the hands-on experience of connecting the motor to the battery's positive and negative terminals to activate each build.
The initial concept sketches were reviewed with the client and then once they had reviewed with their internal team and partners at Discovery we moved into the 3D modeling phase of the first approved concepts. As we progressed through the builds some of the concepts were revised to keep our goal closer to our initial aim of making the entire set a 220 pieces in total.
3D MODELING / RENDERING / CMF
As each build continued to get fine tuned and approved we worked on creating a final packet of Renderings, Specs, CMF, and Assembly Recomendations. All of which was turned
into the client so that they could work with their engineering teams on pre production and production manufacturing. In all this kit included 10 DIY Builds and 7 Experiments.
PRODUCTION PRODUCT
Fast forward a few years and we received a box of the actual Electricity Construction Set that went into production. It is one thing to develop a concept for a client before you know for sure if it will make it to the store shelves. But un-boxing a project for the first time has that childhood birthday present feeling every time.
In all this kit wound up being 239 pieces. Building the each of the designs is a fun and engaging process.
